Alpine County
Unique among California's 58 counties, Alpine consists of 776 square miles of rugged mountain peaks and canyons; beautiful valleys and lush green meadows; clear, cold streams and rivers; and sparkling lakes. Alpine is by far the least populated of all California counties and one of the least populated in the nation. A population of 1100 people (1990) census, resides mainly in the four small villages of Markleeville, Woodfords, Kirkwood, and Bear Valley.
