The eastern Sierra's heartland, Mono County encompasses sweeping views of granite crags, glacial
valleys, unique geological formations, plentiful wildlife, and clear mountain lakes and streams.
This outstanding scenery, and an extraordinary variety of recreational opportunities make Mono
County ideal. Mammoth Lakes is famous for world class downhill skiing. Other winter activities
include cross-country skiing, bobsledding, dogsledding, snowmobiling and sleigh rides. Summer
activities include camping, fishing, boating, sailing, swimming, hiking, backpacking, and
horseback riding.
This area is known historically for explorers, miners, and ranchers. The town of Bodie is one of
the country's largest and best-preserved ghost towns. Bridgeport, the seat of Mono County, boasts
a courthouse, dating back to 1880, which is still in use today.
